SARASOTA, Fla. – Orioles manager Buck Showalter didn’t have any updates this morning on pitcher Chris Tillman.
Tillman is shut down with discomfort in his right shoulder and could receive a cortisone injection. Showalter said the Orioles aren’t contemplating surgery at this time.
Pedro Ãlvarez will work exclusively as an outfielder in camp and will get most of his reps in right. He could slid over to left on occasion.
Closer Zach Britton will make his spring debut Tuesday against the Rays in Sarasota. Shortstop J.J. Hardy is starting today and will play again on Tuesday if his back feels good. He won’t travel to Bradenton on Wednesday, but the Orioles are home again Thursday night against the Phillies.
First baseman Chris Davis is taking batting practice, but he may not play for a few more days while regaining his strength.
Outfielder Seth Smith is performing baseball activities today on the back fields, something he couldn’t do yesterday. He’s been unavailable because of a sore hamstring.
“We’re starting to get some of the gang back together,” Showalter said.
Outfielder Chris Dickerson isn’t available after being hit yesterday on the right elbow.
Outfielder Craig Gentry isn’t playing today due to soreness in his groin area. It’s bothered him on occasion this spring and the Orioles are being cautious.
Showalter arranged a B game against the Pirates at 10 a.m. Friday morning. Mike Wright will start and reliever Darren O’Day will work two innings.
Showalter wants to give Gabriel Ynoa and Chris Lee some starts. You can probably figure out why.
More camp cuts are coming today.
Relievers listed behind starter Kevin Gausman today include Brad Brach, Jesus Liranzo, Oliver Drake and Logan Verrett.
Wade Miley starts Tuesday against the Rays’ Blake Snell.
