Johnson would play third base and first base at Norfolk.
Manager Buck Showalter said Chris Tillman’s game of catch today in Sarasota went even better than Sunday’s first session. Tillman will throw off flat ground again on Thursday.
Showalter has two dates in mind for Tillman to pitch in his first game, but he’s not making them public.
Wade Miley needs a good outing today as Showalter decides whether the left hander will start the third or fourth game, or possibly go on the disabled list to build up his stamina. Showalter is hoping for four innings and 55-60 pitches from Miley.
Oliver Drake is scheduled to throw two innings today and he needs a good outing. He’s struggled this spring and is out of options.
Ubaldo Jiménez will pitch Friday in a minor league game at Twin Lakes Park because of the bad forecast for the exhibition game at Triple-A Norfolk.
Zach Britton will work multiple innings Wednesday against the Rays in Port Charlotte.
Logan Verrett could start at Norfolk if he doesn’t break camp as a long reliever. Tyler Wilson definitely would start for the Tides if he’s optioned.
