An injury has created a roster spot today for Orioles left-hander Wade Miley.
Outfielder Joey Rickard will be placed on the 10-day disabled list with a sprained left middle finger, an injury that occurred yesterday in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Rickard was attempting to steal second base after pinch-running for Hyun Soo Kim. He initially was ruled safe, but umpires overturned the call after the Yankees challenged it.
Rickard stayed in the game as Kim’s replacement in left field.
Manager Buck Showalter sounded confident that Rickard would be ready around the 10-day mark and wouldn’t require a rehab assignment in the minors. However, it’s too early to know the exact timetable.
Rickard is 0-for-6 in four games this season. He didn’t play last year after July 20 due to a torn ligament in his left thumb.
The Orioles are down to a four-man bench with Rickard’s removal. Craig Gentry is starting today in left field against Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia.
Showalter said a healthy Rickard wouldn’t have been the corresponding move today. The Orioles were faced with a difficult decision with Miley coming off the disabled list to make his 2017 debut.
Rickard will accompany the team to Boston for a two-game series that starts Tuesday night. He’s eligible to return on April 19 while the Orioles are in Cincinnati.
Also, Triple-A Norfolk infielder Chris Johnson broke a bone in his forearm last night after being hit by a pitch. He’s expected to be out a minimum of six to eight weeks.
Outfielder Henry Urrutia was added to the Tides roster.
