He did not, and he can not.

I just checked with president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail, who confirmed that the Mets claimed Turner this afternoon.

The news won’t come as much of a surprise in the press box. We were discussing that possibility once Turner was designated for assignment Friday to make room for Scott Moore.

Former Orioles executive Wayne Krivsky joined the Mets front office over the winter, and he’s a big Turner supporter. They were together in the Reds organization. It makes sense.

I always thought Turner could make a pretty decent utility player, especially if he received more innings at shortstop, but he didn’t hit much in brief stints in the majors. The Orioles tried to sneak him through waivers, but the Krivsky factor took hold.

Also, Single-A Frederick first baseman Joe Mahoney is day-to-day after taking a line drive off his left wrist last night. X-rays didn’t reveal any breaks, so Mahoney obviously caught one – if not the ball.

Update: As I’m preparing to pack up my laptop and head to Camden Yards, Jake Arrieta has allowed one run and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings at Triple-A Norfolk. He’s walked two and struck out six. Arrieta has thrown 107 pitches, 68 for strikes.

Left fielder Danny Figueroa, batting ninth, hit a two-run homer today after taking Nolan Reimold’s spot on the Tides’ roster. Nice Triple-A debut.
