Infielder Rubén Tejada’s contract was selected from Triple-A Norfolk, just two days after the Orioles acquired him from the Yankees. Infielder Paul Janish was designated for assignment to create a spot for Tejada.
The 40-man roster remains at 39 players.
Tejada, 27, appeared in 37 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and was batting .269/.345/.462 with seven doubles, six home runs, 21 RBIs and an .806 OPS. He was hitting .344 with a 1.024 OPS versus left-handers.
With is ability to play shortstop, third base and second, Tejada takes over the utility role while Ryan Flaherty is on the disabled list with a strained right shoulder. Flaherty is working out at the Ed Smith Stadium complex in Sarasota.
Tejada is a career 252/.327/.320 hitter in 616 major league games.
The Orioles obtained Tejada from the Yankees on Thursday for cash considerations. It was assumed that they wanted him for infield depth with Janish in Baltimore and Robert Andino serving a 50-game suspension after testing positive for an amphetamine.
Tejada will wear No. 17.
Janish has prior outrights and can refuse an assignment to Norfolk if he clears waivers.
