Frank Mata made his major league debut in the sixth inning after Brian Matusz failed to retire any of the three batters he faced and allowed another run.
Mata, 26, entered with runners on first and second, no outs and the Orioles behind, 6-1. Not a bad debut. We’ll see what he’s got in the seventh.
Unfortunately, Matt Wieters was shaken up after applying the tag. Head athletic trainer Richie Bancells appeared to be checking the back of Wieters’ left shoulder.
Matusz is charged with six runs and eight hits in five-plus innings, with one walk and four strikeouts. He threw 94 pitches, 59 strikes.
Matusz has allowed 13 runs and 16 hits in his last two starts covering 7 1/3 innings.
Tonight’s attendance: 19,153.
Update: Wieters batted in the bottom of the sixth and is behind the plate as Mata warms up in the seventh.
The Orioles have two hits through six innings – a Garrett Atkins home run and Corey Patterson bunt single. I’m sure those would have been your two guesses at the beginning of the night.
