The Orioles completed a trade this afternoon that sends short-season Single-A Aberdeen pitcher Tobias Myers to the Rays for shortstop Tim Beckham, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 draft.
The deal was completed just prior to the 4 p.m. non-waiver deadline and announced 40 minutes later.
Manager Buck Showalter declined to comment on the trade during his session with the media because it hadn’t been made public.

Beckham, 27, is batting .259/.314/.407 with five doubles, three triples, 12 home runs and 36 RBIs in 87 games, his playing time reduced after the Rays acquired shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria from the Marlins. He’s a career .247/.299/.407 hitter in parts of four seasons.
Beckham is under team control through 2020 and he could be the regular shortstop next season with J.J. Hardy entering free agency. He’s played all four infield positions.
The Orioles selected Myers, 18, in the sixth round of last year’s First-Year Player Draft out of Winter Haven High School. Armed with a mid-90s fastball, he was 2-2 with a 3.94 ERA in seven start starts at Aberdeen.
The Tampa Bay Times first reported the trade.
Relievers Zach Britton and Brad Brach remain with the Orioles, who weren’t satisfied with the offers they received. There were some health concerns over players headed back to the Orioles that apparently nixed a few possible trades.
Jeremy Hellickson will make his Orioles debut on Wednesday after throwing in the bullpen this afternoon. Mark Trumbo may go on the disabled list later today to make roster space for Hellickson, who must be activated tonight.
The Orioles would be playing a man short.
Trumbo will undergo an MRI Tuesday to confirm whether he sustained an oblique injury.
Showalter watched video early today of Double-A pitcher Yefry RamÃrez, obtained by the Orioles for international signing bonus slots. Ramirez is added to the 40-man roster. No word on whether he’ll report to Bowie or Triple-A Norfolk.
“He’s got a good arm. He’s a good addition,” Showalter said.
Infielder Ryan Flaherty will start at shortstop tonight at Single-A Frederick as he continues his injury rehab assignment.
