Orioles minor league pitcher Miguel Gonzalez passed away earlier today from injuries he sustained Saturday night in a car accident in the Dominican Republic.
Gonzalez, 21 pitched for the Orioles Dominican Summer League team the past three seasons. He signed as an undrafted free agent in 2014.
The Orioles will hold a moment of silence for Gonzalez before tonight’s game.
“Our organization is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Miguel Gonzalez,” executive vice president Dan Duquette said in a statement. “Miguel was beloved by his teammates and coaches in the Dominican Republic. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this very difficult time.”
Gonzalez appeared in 15 games this season and was 1-1 with a 6.56 ERA in 23 1/3 innings. He’s not related to former Orioles pitcher Miguel Gonzalez.
