The Orioles are 8-12 against left-handers this season.
The Orioles begin today ranked 27th in the majors with a .230 average and 28th in the majors – and last in the American League – with a .675 OPS.
The team’s 4.85 ERA ranked 26th in the majors, including a 5.29 ERA among the starters that was 26th.
According to STATS, the series win at Citi Field this week was just the second in Orioles history when scoring three runs or fewer. They also swept a two-game series from the Yankees on Sept. 9-10, 1970 with 1-0 and 2-1 victories.
Also per STATS, the last time that the Orioles won back-to-back games without an extra-base hit was May 1, 2003, when they swept a doubleheader against the Tigers.
Down on the farm, Ryan Mountcastle hit his fourth home run today in Double-A Bowie’s 7-5 win over the Portland Sea Dogs. Mountcastle is batting .297 with an .809 OPS in 25 games.
Left-hander Brian Gonzalez, the Orioles’ third-round pick in 2014 – they didn’t have a selection in the first two – allowed two runs in six innings and lowered his ERA to 8.10 in four starts with the Baysox after moving up from Single-A Frederick.
Branden Kline recorded the final out for his first save and his third this season. He also was promoted from Frederick.
Kline is working as a reliever this season, with all 17 of his appearances coming out of the bullpen. The Frederick native and former second-round pick in 2012 out of the University of Virginia underwent Tommy John surgery in October 2015 and required two follow-up procedures and periods of being shut down, but his fastball is climbing into the upper 90s and the Orioles are encouraged by his progress and potential to pitch for them.
