Andrew Cashner makes his 23rd start of the season tonight as the Orioles begin a two-game series against the Mets at Camden Yards.
Cashner has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his last six starts and three or fewer in nine of 11. He’s facing the Mets for the 10th time in his career, making only his fifth start. He’s 0-3 with a 6.18 ERA and 1.590 WHIP in 27 2/3 innings.
Todd Frazier is 5-for-13 with five doubles against Cashner.
Left-hander Jason Vargas is scuffling in his first season with the Mets, going 2-8 with an 8.75 ERA and 1.838 WHIP in 12 starts. He’s allowed 67 hits and walked 20 batters in 47 1/3 innings. He’s also been on the disabled list twice with a broken bone in his right hand and a strained right calf muscle.
Not much of a return so far on the two-year, $16 million deal he signed in February.
Vargas started against the Orioles on June 5 at Citi Field and allowed two runs in five innings in a 2-1 loss. The Orioles swept the two-game series despite scoring only three runs.
Vargas has made five career starts at Camden Yards, posted a 3.15 ERA and 1.107 WHIP and lost all four decisions. He’s 2-5 with a 2.33 ERA, 1.066 WHIP and two complete games in 10 starts against the Orioles.
Adam Jones is 6-for-33 (.182) with two doubles against Vargas. Mark Trumbo is 4-for-21 (.190) with 12 strikeouts. Chris Davis is 3-for-17 (.176) with a home run and five strikeouts.
Trumbo has returned to the lineup tonight after beginning the last two games on the bench with a sore right knee.
Renato Núñez is batting second. Cedric Mullins is ninth.
Trey Mancini has hit safely in 15 of 22 games since the All-Star Break, batting .302 (26-for-86) with five home runs and 13 RBIs.
The Orioles are 6-12 in interleague games this season.
On this date in 1998, Chris Hoiles became the ninth player in baseball history to hit two grand slams in one game, doing it in a 15-3 win in Cleveland. Also on this date in 2009, Felix Pie became just the fourth Orioles player to hit for the cycle in a 16-6 win over the Angels at Camden Yards. The Orioles tied club records with 12 extra-base hits and nine doubles.
