The Orioles host the Yankees twice today at Camden Yards. It’s a day-night doubleheader with games at 1:05 p.m. and 7:05 p.m. New York rallied for a 7-5 win in 10 innings last night at Oriole Park as Neil Walker and Luke Voit hit 10th-inning homers off Cody Carroll to break a 4-4 tie.
The Orioles (37-91) have lost five in a row and this is their 10th losing streak of at least five games this year. They have four losing streaks of seven games or more and a nine-game streak is the longest of the year. New York (80-47) has won five of six and 12 of 17 games, and is 7-6 versus the Orioles and 31-26 in American League East games.
Right-hander Jimmy Yacabonis (0-1, 6.75 ERA) has been called up today for the twinbill as the Orioles’ 26th player. He gets the Game 1 start and it’s his sixth major league game of this season and fourth start. His last start was Aug. 11 at home versus Boston, also in a doubleheader. He went 4 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, three runs and two home runs on 60 pitches.
Yacabonis has converted from the bullpen to a starting pitcher this year and has gone 3-4 with a 3.93 ERA over 20 starts at Triple-A Norfolk. In his most recent Triple-A start on Aug. 18, he went five innings allowing two hits and one run on 57 pitches.
Lefty J.A. Happ (14-6, 3.84 ERA) will make the start for New York. Happ has averaged 2.7 walks per nine innings this year and 10.0 strikeouts. He was traded by Toronto to the Yankees on July 26, with Brandon Drury and Billy McKinney going to the Blue Jays.
In four starts with New York, Happ is 4-0 with a 2.22 ERA. In 24 1/3 innings, he has allowed 15 hits and six runs with seven walks, 23 strikeouts and a .179 batting average against. He’s allowed two earned runs or less in three of those four games. Lefty batters have hit just .083 against him, while right-handed batters have hit .217.
Second baseman Jonathan Villar hit his 10th home run of the season and fourth with the Orioles last night. It was a two-run go-ahead homer in the seventh inning. Villar tied his season-high with three hits for the seventh time overall and third time with the Orioles. He has hit safely in eight of 10 career games against the Yankees, hitting .325 (13-for-40).
O’s first sacker Chris Davis hit his 16th home run of the season, a solo homer in the 10th inning last night off Zach Britton. Davis recorded his fourth three-RBI game and his 10th multi-RBI game of the season. He also had a season-high three hits, his most in a game since also recording three on Aug. 14, 2017 against Seattle. Davis snapped an 0-for-14 stretch against left-handed pitching.
