The Orioles’ move to begin signing international amateur talent continued today when the club announced it has agreed to terms with outfielder Damian Valdez, a 16-year-old out of the Dominican Republic.
A source said the Orioles signed Valdez to a $200,000 bonus.
Executive vice president Dan Duquette said in a team-issued statement: “Valdez is a gifted, young left-handed hitter. He possesses a discerning batting eye and is capable of hitting the ball to all fields with power. We hope he develops into the type of player our fans enjoy seeing at Camden Yards.”
On Tuesday, the Orioles announced the signings of infielder Moises Ramirez, a 16-year-old out of the Dominican Republic, and right-handed pitcher Carlos del Rosario, a 19-year-old out of the Dominican Republic.
“Today’s signings are part of a coordinated plan for the Orioles to re-establish the club in the international recruiting arena,” Duquette said regarding those signings in a statement on Tuesday.
“Ramirez has all the tools to be a solid offensive player in the middle of the diamond, and del Rosario has the size and pitches to develop into a major league pitcher. Our player development staff looks forward to working with them to further develop their skills.”
On Aug. 20, the club announced an agreement with Isaac Bellony, a 16-year-old switch-hitting outfielder out of the Dominican Republic who was born in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He was signed to a $220,000 bonus.
That was first official announcement by the Orioles of any international amateur signing since the new signing period went into effect on July 2.
The club is also known to have agreements with Dominican right-hander Kelvin LaRoche and center fielder J’Rudjeanon Isenia of Curacao.
