NEW YORK – Rookie Austin Wynns gets another start behind the plate tonight and Chris Davis is back at first base as the Orioles open a three-game series against the Yankees.
Joey Rickard is in left field, Tim Beckham is starting at shortstop and Trey Mancini is the designated hitter.
Yefry RamÃrez is making his third start and fourth appearance against the Yankees. He’s allowed a combined 10 runs and 15 hits in nine innings in his two starts, and he tossed three scoreless innings out of the bullpen on Aug. 26.
Brett Gardner is 3-for-6 with a home run against RamÃrez and Didi Gregorius is 4-for-5 with a double.
Left-hander CC Sabathia posted a 3.51 ERA and 1.270 WHIP in the first half, and he’s registered a 4.50 ERA and 1.524 WHIP since the break. He’s 0-2 with a 9.28 ERA and 2.250 WHIP in three starts this month covering 10 2/3 innings, with 11 earned runs (12 total) and 21 hits allowed.
Sabathia is 19-11 with a 3.69 ERA and 1.223 WHIP in 44 career starts against the Orioles.
David Hess opposes Lance Lynn on Saturday. The Sunday starters remain TBD.
The Orioles have hired former outfielder Rich Amaral and Doug Witt as scouts, as first reported by The Athletic.
Amaral was hired after the June draft but before the non-waiver trade deadline and will be used in a hybrid role, with focus on amateur and professional special assignments, and will serve as basestealing instructor. Witt also will be used in multiple roles, with an emphasis on pro scouting.
Amaral played for the Orioles in 1999-2000 to close out his career. Witt is the brother of former major league pitcher Bobby Witt and the uncle of high school shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., projected to be the first overall pick in next June’s draft. The Orioles continue to have the worst record in baseball.
Orioles taking early batting practice today included DJ Stewart, John Andreoli, Steve Wilkerson and Breyvic Valera.
On this date in 1971, Dave McNally shut out New York 5-0 at Yankee Stadium, marking his fourth consecutive 20-win season. He was the first of four Orioles with 20 wins in 1971, later joined by Jim Palmer, Pat Dobson and Mike Cuellar.
The 1920 Chicago White Sox were the only other club with four 20-game winners.
