Orioles head groundskeeper Nicole Sherry was recently recognized at the Sports Turf Managers Association national conference in Phoenix, Ariz.

Sherry was honored with the Dick Ericson Founders’ Award, which is given annually to the STMA member who effectively manages sports fields and thier facility, exhibiting the qualities of a true team leader. Ericson was the organization’s first president and continues to have an impact in raising the level of professionalism within the turf industry.

Sherry-Grip-and-Grin-sidebar.jpgShe is the second Major League Baseball head groundskeeper to receive the Dick Ericson Founders’ Award. Heather Nabozny of the Tigers won the award in 2001.

Sherry is entering her 13th season as the Orioles head groundskeeper and her 16th season overall with the club. She served as the assistant head groundskeeper at Camden Yards from 2001-03 and spent 2004-06 with Double-A Trenton, a Yankees affiliate, as their head groundskeeper.

She is the second woman to serve as a head groundskeeper for an MLB franchise, joining the Tigers’ Nabozny.

A native of New Castle, Del., Sherry is a graduate of the University of Delaware with a degree in agriculture.
