Not sure if the Matt Wieters home run is the reason, but Jeremy Guthrie sure settled down after the second inning.
Guthrie has retired 10 of the last 11 batters since he drilled Jorge Cantu on the left side and caused plate umpire Doug Eddings to warn both benches. Ronny Paulino’s single leading off the fourth inning is the only smudge in that streak.

Update II: Guthrie is charged with six runs and seven hits in six-plus innings. He walked two, struck out three and hit two batters. Guthrie threw 108 pitches, 68 for strikes.

Down on the farm, Triple-A Norfolk’s Tim Bascom is shutting out Lehigh Valley on three hits through the fifth. He’s walked one and struck out five.
Jeff Salazar hit his 12th home run for the Tides. Josh Bell is 1-for-2 to leave his average at .271. Nolan Reimold is 0-for-2.
Nathan Nery, promoted earlier today to Double-A Bowie, has allowed five runs and 11 hits in five innings against Reading.
