Interim manager Juan Samuel mentioned after tonight’s 10-4 loss to the Marlins that starter Jeremy Guthrie “didn’t look right” in the early innings. To be more precise, Guthrie was missing his spots, hung a few breaking balls and fell behind, 4-0, in the second.
“But he settled down after that. We just couldn’t hold them,” Samuel said.

“He just did not look good there the first couple of innings. Pitch count was getting up there. I started to worry a little bit, but then he kind of settled down there and gave us some good innings.”
Guthrie retired 13 of 14 before walking Chris Coghlan and allowing an RBI double to Gaby Sanchez in the seventh.
“He just seemed more determined on the mound, taking more charge,” Samuel said. “For some reason, he did not look that way to me tonight, especially in the first couple innings.”
Samuel was asked whether he might reconsider using Scott Moore at second base.
“We’ve still got a lot to work on with Scott on double plays,” Samuel replied. “We brought him out early on the road. Right now, he’s going to get some playing time against righties and (Julio) Lugo’s going to get some playing time against lefties. We’ll go from there.
“He doesn’t look that comfortable turning double plays. It’s something that we need to continue to work on.”
