If you’re coming to Sunday’s game between the Orioles and Indians, how about bringing along a new or gently used piece of baseball equipment for the Oriole Advocates’ annual Cardboard to Leather collection.
Members of the Advocates will be at all gates to collect bats, balls, gloves, bases, uniforms and other equipment for distribution to youth players in underserved areas who otherwise wouldn’t have new gear.
If you don’t have any equipment, don’t worry – financial donations are always welcome. In the recent past, these donations have been used to purchase backstops and dugout benches, turning grass fields into proper baseball diamonds.
Since the Cardboard to Leather program was founded in 1992, the Advocates have distributed equipment to youth baseball players around the world in countries like Afghanistan, Belize, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nicaragua, Serbia and Venezuela, in addition to the United States.
This year, in conjunction with the annual Cardboard to Leather collection, the Oriole Advocates will hold a fundraising silent auction during Sunday’s game. Check out the sports memorabilia on the lower concourse near Gate E from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.. Fans can bid on baseballs, photos, bats and jerseys autographed by current Orioles players.
