Cashner was supposed to start Sunday afternoon’s series finale against the Rays and manager Brandon Hyde will need to come up with a replacement.
The Orioles figured to trade Cashner at some point over the summer. He was their biggest available chip with Trey Mancini’s status uncertain.
There aren’t many pitchers on a sweeter roll right now than Cashner. He posted a 1.44 ERA and 0.800 WHIP in four starts last month and held the Blue Jays to one run over seven innings on July 6.
Cashner has completed seven innings in his last two starts and allowed only one run and six hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts. His ERA is down to 3.83.
The Phillies were one of the teams with interest in Cashner, according to an industry source. They were on him “hard,” according to the source, but the Red Sox swung a deal.
The pending free agent went 13-18 with a 4.73 ERA and 1.432 WHIP in 45 starts with the Orioles.
More to come, including comments from executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias.
