Luke Scott’s second double of the night, a shot that cleared right fielder Gabe Gross’ head, reduced Oakland’s lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth. Gross had just replaced Rajai Davis in right.
Scott’s hit came after Nick Markakis doubled and Ty Wigginton swung at the next pitch and flied out.
A fan sitting in front of the press box yelled, “Way to work the count!”
Koji Uehara got into his first game since May 19 and allowed a leadoff double to Coco Crisp. Jason Berken’s ERA is down to 1.60 after he tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings tonight. He gave up two hits, walked one and struck out two.
Jim Hoey’s fastball was clocked at 97 mph at Double-A Bowie.
Both home runs tonight for Triple-A Norfolk third baseman Josh Bell came from the left side of the plate, in case you were wondering.
Bell also committed his 13th error.
Paco Figueroa hit his first Triple-A home run.
Chris Tillman allowed three runs, all on solo homers, in 6 2/3 innings.
Going back to the Cal Ripken interview, he was asked for his thoughts on the current Orioles.
“Certainly, as a fan you kind of sit back and you feel for them,” he said. “You hope and wish things will turn around, and there are a lot of reasons for optimism. Andy’s done a good job assembling some good young talent.
“I think the slow start made everybody press and try too hard. For a young player, it’s not fair. You play outside your means when you need to learn to play within your skill set and means.”
