The roster moves keep coming from the Orioles, adding another layer of intrigue as the trade deadline approaches.

Infielder José Rondón has been claimed off waivers from the White Sox. He’s expected to join the team Thursday at Camden Yards following the return trip from San Diego and off-day.

Rondón, 25, is a career .202/.260/.337 hitter in a combined 105 games with the Padres and White Sox. He was slashing .197/.265/.282 this season in 156 plate appearances.

Versatility is the obvious appeal, not what he offers at the plate.

Rondon-Throws-White-Sox-Sidebar.jpgRondón has played all four infield positions and left field. He also tossed a scoreless inning on May 4 against the Red Sox while used in emergency relief, so he’ll fit right in with the Orioles.

The Angels signed Rondón as an amateur free agent in 2011 and included him in a trade with the Padres three years later. The White Sox purchased his contract in January 2018.

Rondón was designated for assignment Sunday to make room for rookie outfielder Eloy Jimenez, who came off the injured list. Rondón hit 18 home runs last summer at Triple-A Charlotte and six more with the White Sox.

How does he work for the Orioles?

Dwight Smith Jr. went on the injured list today with a strained left calf and the Orioles must add a position player. They recalled pitcher Chandler Shepherd today.

Jace Peterson also is a super-utility player, batting from the left side, and he’s in left field today. With no assurances that he’s staying.

The Orioles are seeking a trade partner for middle infielder Jonathan Villar. Hanser Alberto also is a potential chip with the deadline set for 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Rondón would be a convenient replacement.

Shepherd has a chance to become the 51st player used by the Orioles this season and seventh to make his major league debut.

The club record for most players used is 56 set last season.

The Orioles aren’t listing their starters for the four-game series against the Blue Jays that begins Thursday at Camden Yards.
