The Orioles placed four players on their expanded September roster this morning, recalling outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. and pitchers Branden Kline and Tanner Scott from Triple-A Norfolk and reinstating pitcher Shawn Armstrong from the 10-day injured list.
More moves are coming after Monday.
Smith is starting in left field today as the Orioles close out their series in Kansas City.
Trey Mancini is playing first base with the lineup leaning heavy to the right side. Smith is the only Oriole who bats exclusively from the left side.
Last night, Anthony Santander became the youngest Orioles player (24 years, 316 days) to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game since 23-year-old Eddie Murray on Aug. 29, 1979, according to STATS.
Santander’s 16 homers are the most by an Orioles outfielder 24 or younger since Adam Jones (19) in 2010.
The Orioles were 10-18 in August. They’ve lost eight of their last nine games at Kauffman Stadium and haven’t won a series in Kansas City since sweeping a two-game set May 16-17, 2012.
Left-hander Danny Duffy, off the injured list, is 3-2 with a 2.17 ERA and 1.067 WHIP in 10 career games (eight starts) against the Orioles. Mancini is 3-for-9. Chris Davis is 2-16 with a double, home run and seven strikeouts.
