The Orioles were charged with two errors tonight, but they failed to make plays all over the field.
“There’s no doubt that we do have to pick it up defensively,” interim manager Juan Samuel said. “We have been able to overcome those mistakes the last few days, but most of the time it’s not going to happen. Anytime you give the opposing club four or five outs, those kinds of things are going to happen. “There’s no doubt that we do have to pick it up defensively,” interim manager Juan Samuel said. “We have been able to overcome those mistakes the last few days, but most of the time it’s not going to happen. Anytime you give the opposing club four or five outs, those kinds of things are going to happen. We do need to play all-around solid baseball if we’re going to continue to make progress.”
The Orioles committed 10 errors on the homestand and 11 in their last 10 games. But again, those numbers don’t reflect the poor reads by Corey Patterson in left and Adam Jones in center, and the inability to turn double plays.
“Those guys are definitely better than what we’ve seen,” Samuel said. “Corey, as we know, is primarily a center fielder, so that’s not an easy position to play. We understand that. And Jonesy, he’s been better, so we do expect those guys to pick it up.”
Scott Moore was wiped out twice at second base after taking Josh Bell’s throw and trying to complete the double play. Bell needs to get rid of the ball quicker, but Moore also takes responsibility.
“What we’re working on with Scotty Moore is trying to come across the bag a little bit more,” Samuel said. “We are doing it during practice but he’s still going back to his old tendencies of trying to hang around the bag too long. We’d like to see him come across more on those double plays.”
