TORONTO – After their marathon, 15-inning 11-10 loss to Toronto that ended early this morning, the Orioles and Blue Jays meet tonight in Game 2 of this series at Rogers Centre. It is also the second game of a season-ending six-game road trip that takes the Orioles to Boston beginning Friday.
In yesterday’s loss, Austin Hays went 3-for-8 with two homers, five RBIs and four strikeouts. He also made several outstanding catches in a game where all of his talents were on display. His three-run homer in the third pulled the Orioles within 5-3 and his solo shot two innings later cut Toronto’s lead to 6-5.
The Orioles blew three leads in this game when they led 7-6 after five innings, 9-7 to the last of the ninth and 10-9 to the bottom of the 12th. Chris Davis hit a homer in the top of the 12th to give Baltimore a short-lived lead and Davis produced homers in back-to-back games for the first time since July 7-8, 2018.
The teams combined to hit 10 homers, five by each club. That tied a season high for the Orioles, set on June 4 at Texas. The Orioles (51-106) are now 2-8 in extra innings, 26-50 on the road, 15-36 in series-opening games, 21-50 versus the American League East and 7-10 against Toronto.
On the mound tonight, right-hander Dylan Bundy (6-14, 4.89 ERA) will make his team-leading 30th start. Over 154 2/3 innings, he has allowed 158 hits and 28 homers, after giving up 41 in 2018. Bundy has a WHIP of 1.384 and averages 3.3 walks per nine innings and 9.1 strikeouts.
The Orioles are 9-20 when he starts. Over his past 10 games, Bundy is 1-3 with a 4.45 ERA. In 12 road starts, he is 4-5 with a 4.85 ERA.
In his last game on Wednesday, Bundy gave up one run in five innings versus Toronto. In four starts this year, he is 1-0 with a 2.12 ERA against the Blue Jays. In 14 career games, he is 4-3 with a 3.13 ERA and six quality starts. This season, Bundy has made 11 starts in the division and he is 3-4 with a 5.03 ERA in AL East games.
Toronto (64-93) has won six of eight and eight of 12 games. The 11-10 win was by the same score they beat the Orioles on Wednesday. Toronto is 32-44 at home and 9-11 this month.
The Blue Jays will start lefty Thomas Pannone (3-5, 5.90 ERA). He replaces lefty Anthony Kay (1-0, 5.79 ERA), who was listed to start tonight but was scratched due to back pain about two hours before first pitch. Pannone has made five appearances and one start this year against the Orioles and is 0-0 with a 2.70 ERA and three walks to 17 strikeouts over 13 1/3 innings. Pannone pitched a scoreless sixth inning on 20 pitches last night.
Last night’s 15-inning affair was the club’s second-longest game of the season by both innings played and time of game (5 hours, 21 minutes), behind the 16-inning win at the Los Angeles Angels on July 25, which lasted 6:19. It was the ninth time this season the O’s have scored double-digit runs and just their second loss in such games (7-2).
Trey Mancini has hit safely in 10 straight games dating to Sept. 13, and is batting .413 (19-for-46) with four doubles, four home runs and 16 RBIs during this stretch. Over his past 17 games, Mancini is batting .375 (27-for-72) with six doubles, five homers and 17 RBIs.
