The Orioles started to make changes to their coaching staff this afternoon.

First base coach Arnie Beyeler and assistant hitting coach Howie Clark won’t be retained in 2020, according to multiple industry sources.

They were working on one-year contracts that won’t be renewed next season.

Beyeler also served as the outfield instructor, handling two tasks that belonged to Wayne Kirby under previous manager Buck Showalter. Kirby has been hired by the Braves as minor league outfield coordinator.

arnie-beyeler-walking-white-sidebar.jpgThe Orioles hired Beyeler after he spent the past three seasons as manager with the Marlins’ Triple-A affiliate in New Orleans. He was the Red Sox’s first base coach and outfield instructor from 2013-15.

Among the challenges presented to Beyeler this season was teaching infielder Stevie Wilkerson to play the outfield. He also worked on Anthony Santander’s transfer from the corner outfield spots to center field.

Clark was the only holdover from Showalter’s staff. The former Orioles utility player was named assistant hitting coach in February 2017.

Clark also served as Single-A Delmarva’s hitting coach in 2015 and Double-A Bowie’s hitting coach the following season.

Decisions are still pending on the rest of the staff, which is expected to undergo further alterations – whether impacted by outside hires or changing of roles.

Bullpen coach John Wasdin also was in the organization last season, though he worked as the minor league pitching coordinator before the Orioles hired Chris Holt for the job.

Tim Cossins is expected to remain after serving this year as major league field coordinator and catching instructor, though it isn’t known whether his titles and set of responsibilities will stay the same.

I’ve been told that Cossins received a two-year deal.

Others on the staff this season who completed their first seasons with the Orioles include pitching coach Doug Brocail, hitting coach Don Long, third base coach/infield instructor José Flores and major league coach José Hernandez.

Hernandez had spent the past six years on Triple-A Norfolk’s coaching staff.

The Orioles were rushed to piece together a staff, sifting through available coaches, after hiring Brandon Hyde as manager in December.
