A deal was finalized today to make Anthony Sanders the first base coach, according to a source. The Orioles haven’t announced it.

The sides drew close to an agreement late last week, and the final details have been completed.

A gold medal winner on the 2000 Olympic team, Sanders has spent the past 14 seasons as a manager, coach and instructor in the Rockies system. He’s served most recently as outfield and baserunning coordinator.

Sanders also served on the USA Baseball coaching staff, which sweetened his resume and increased the Orioles’ level of interest. New director of player development Matt Blood spent three years as director of its 18-and-under National Team Program.

Sanders is a former outfielder who appeared in 13 games with the Blue Jays and Mariners from 1999-2001.

The hiring of Sanders leaves the Orioles searching for replacements for assistant hitting coach Howie Clark and bullpen coach John Wasdin.

It’s unlikely that those deals will get done this week, with business shortened by the Thanksgiving holiday.

Note: The Athletics signed catcher Carlos Pérez to a minor league deal. Perez, 29, appeared in 94 games with Double-A Bowie this summer and batted .251/.302/.434 with 22 doubles, 14 home runs and 60 RBIs.

The Orioles are seeking a veteran catcher on a minor league deal to bring to camp next spring.
