Luke Scott is listed on the Gulf Coast League Orioles’ roster today, joining second baseman Brian Roberts.

Scott has been running and hitting at the minor league complex in Sarasota, and he’s serving as the designated hitter and batting third today against the GCL Twins in his first injury rehab game. Roberts is leading off and playing second base.

Update: Roberts lined a single…The All-Star Game earned its lowest rating on Tuesday.

Scott has been running and hitting at the minor league complex in Sarasota, and he’s serving as the designated hitter and batting third today against the GCL Twins in his first injury rehab game. Roberts is leading off and playing second base.

Update: Roberts lined a single into right field in the first inning, making him 6-for-7 in three games. Scott reached on an error by Twins third baseman Miguel Sano.

Yes, that Miguel Sano.

Update II: Scott lined a two-run single into center field in the second inning. Roberts struck out in his second at-bat.

A frantic internet search led me to Baseball America’s account of Rice third baseman Anthony Rendon’s severe ankle injury.

Rendon will require another surgical procedure on his right ankle, the second in two years, after his leg buckled as he scrambled back to first base during a rundown last night in Team USA’s game against Korea at the USA Baseball National Training Center.

The Baseball America article includes the following paragraph:

Team USA first-base coach Ed Blankmeyer, the first person to reach Rendon, said after the game that Rendon’s foot was bent at an unnatural angle, and it was apparent immediately that the injury was serious. He was carted off the field and taken by ambulance to a local hospital for X-rays. As of late Wednesday night, the unofficial word was that Rendon sustained multiple fractures in his ankle and foot and will require a pin to be inserted.

Rendon is widely projected as the first-overall pick in next year’s draft. Plenty of teams, including the Orioles, will pay close attention to his recovery.

Rendon tore two ligaments in the same ankle in June 2009 while chasing a popup in the Super Regional.
