Orioles select Goudeau off waivers and outright Wynns

The Orioles made their first virtual Winter Meetings move this afternoon by claiming right-hander Ashton Goudeau off waivers from the Pirates and outrighting catcher Austin Wynns to Triple-A Norfolk.
The 40-man roster still holds 38 players heading into Thursday’s Rule 5 draft.
Goudeau, 28, made his major league debut this summer with the Rockies. He allowed seven runs and 15 hits in four relief appearances covering 8 1/3 innings.

The Orioles made their first virtual Winter Meetings move this afternoon by claiming right-hander Ashton Goudeau off waivers from the Pirates and outrighting catcher Austin Wynns to Triple-A Norfolk.

The 40-man roster still holds 38 players heading into Thursday’s Rule 5 draft.

Goudeau, 28, made his major league debut this summer with the Rockies. He allowed seven runs and 15 hits in four relief appearances covering 8 1/3 innings.

The Royals selected Goudeau in the 27th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Maple Woods Community College in Kansas City. The Mariners purchased his contract in 2018, the Rockies signed him as a free agent later in the year and the Pirates selected him off waivers last month.

Goudeau (pronounced goo-DOE) is 29-48 with a 4.81 ERA and 1.403 WHIP in 171 minor league games. He’s made 70 starts, including 16 in 2019 with Double-A Hartford, where he posted a 2.07 ERA and 0.919 WHIP in 78 1/3 innings. He averaged 1.4 walks and 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

Goudeau has averaged 0.9 home runs allowed per nine innings in the minors.

Scouts watched Goudeau toss 13 scoreless innings with no walks and 18 strikeouts in 2019 in the Arizona Fall League.

Wynns kept landing on the Orioles taxi squad this summer, but he didn’t appear in a major league game.

With no previous outright, Wynns is unable to elect free agency and seek another job after clearing waivers. He could return to spring training in February as an invite to camp.

The only catchers on the 40-man roster are Pedro Severino, who just agreed to a $1.8 million contract to avoid arbitration, and Chance Sisco. The Orioles are in the market for another catcher to provide depth with Bryan Holaday entering free agency.

Martin Cervenka is a minor league free agent. The Orioles re-signed Taylor Davis.
