Corey Patterson joined Craig Tatum tonight as players who were instructed to lay down a sacrifice bunt and couldn’t do it.
Tatum walked in the fifth to load the bases with no outs, and Cesar Izturis singled in two runs to give the Orioles a 2-1 lead. No real harm. But Patterson struck out in the eighth after Izturis’ leadoff single.

Miguel Tejada singled to put runners on the corners with one out, but Nick Markakis grounded into a routine 6-3 double play.
Markakis took a pitch that he thought would run the count to 2-0, but plate umpire Jim Reynolds called it a strike. Markakis didn’t hide his displeasure, and he sent the next pitch to shortstop Yunel Escobar.
Jason Berken had allowed three home runs in 50 2/3 innings before tonight, and only one since May 29.
Interim manager Juan Samuel stayed away from Jake Fox again tonight, letting Izturis bat in the eighth against left-hander Marc Rzepczynski.
Update: I could call this part “Moore frustration.” Pinch-hitter Scott Moore swung at the first pitch after back-to-back walks with one out in the ninth and flied to left. Closer Kevin Gregg walked Julio Lugo to load the bases, and manager Cito Gaston brought in Shawn Camp, who retired Izturis on a grounder to short.
Fox and Josh Bell didn’t get off the bench. Izturis had two hits and two RBIs tonight, which probably bought him another at-bat in the ninth.
