Dean Kremer lasted only three innings in his first start in New York, allowing three runs and five hits with four walks and five strikeouts. He also was nailed on the leg by an Aaron Judge line drive.
Sheffield has been traded twice since the Indians made him the 31st overall pick in the 2014 draft. He’s appeared in 22 games in the majors and posted a 4.64 ERA and 1.525 WHIP in 99 innings and averaged 3.9 walks per nine innings.
His first start in 2021 didn’t go well, with Sheffield allowing four earned runs (six total) and eight hits over five innings against the White Sox.
Right-handers slash .310/.378/.437 against Sheffield and left-handers hit .174/.304/.267.
In his only career start against the Orioles, on Sept. 21, 2019 in Baltimore, Sheffield allowed four runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Stevie Wilkerson doubled twice and Richie Martin once, but they’re at the alternate training site in Bowie.
The Orioles (4-5) have lost five of their last six games. The Mariners have won two straight and are 5-4.
Players taking early batting practice included Mountcastle, UrÃas, Galvis, Anthony Santander, Ryan McKenna, Chance Sisco and Rio Ruiz.
The game-time temperature will be 53 degrees with a 22 percent chance of precipitation. Stay tuned for the barometric pressure.
