Purchased from the Indians on March 27, Plutko hasn’t started since Aug. 21, 2020. His longest outing with the Orioles was three scoreless innings on April 6 versus the Yankees in the Bronx.
The 39 pitches also were his highest total in 2021.
Plutko threw a scoreless inning against the Yankees on Friday, issuing a walk and getting a double play. He was done after 17 pitches.
The baton is going to be passed today and left-hander Bruce Zimmermann will be reaching for it.
The Orioles recalled Zimmermann today from Triple-A Norfolk and he could work in bulk relief. He made six starts before they optioned him on May 3 and he hasn’t pitched since going three innings with the Tides on May 8.
Infielder Ramón UrÃas was optioned to Norfolk after his run-scoring single last night in the ninth inning. He’s 12-for-53 (.226) with two doubles, a home run, six RBIs and 17 strikeouts.
Plutko hasn’t allowed a run against the Yankees this season in three appearances covering 6 1/3 innings.
Right-handed hitters are batting .128/.236/.149 against Plutko this season and left-handers are batting .292/.346/.500.
Six of Aaron Judge’s 11 home runs in 2021 have come against the Orioles. The staff again will be challenged to contain him.
Left-hander John Means threw a bullpen session this morning. He starts Wednesday against the Rays.
The Orioles are trying to avoid being swept for the third time this season. Their lineup hasn’t been posted.
The Yankees are starting left-hander Jordan Montgomery, who has a 3.96 ERA and 1.034 WHIP in seven starts. He’s already faced the Orioles twice and allowed two runs in 11 innings.
Montgomery owns a career 2.63 ERA and 1.250 WHIP in nine starts against the Orioles.
Outfielder Giancarlo Stanton remains unavailable with a quadriceps injury.
Another Yankees staff member has tested positive for COVID-19.
