Rookie Keegan Akin went a career-high 5 2/3 innings in his last start in Cleveland, but he was charged with eight runs and eight hits and his ERA jumped from 4.13 to 5.76. He’s never faced the Astros.
Jake Odorizzi, in his first season with the Astros, is 1-3 with a 5.68 ERA and 1.184 WHIP in seven games. He’s averaging 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings.
Odorizzi missed a month of the season with a strain of the right pronator (forearm) muscle.
The Orioles are familiar with Odorizzi from his days with the Rays. He’s made 20 appearances against them and posted a 4.17 ERA and 1.315 WHIP in 105 2/3 innings.
Mancini is 2-for-12 with a home run against him.
The Astros have won seven games in a row and 15 of 20 and are sitting in first place in the American League West with a 43-28 record. They have a plus-112 run differential.
Their .315 average, .386 on-base percentage, .574 slugging percentage and .960 OPS over the last 15 games lead the majors. The pitching staff’s 2.87 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and .199 opponents’ average lead the American League over the same stretch.
