The Orioles are shaking up their bullpen and 26-man roster.
A source confirmed that relievers Dusten Knight and Marcos Diplán are traveling to New York today to join the Orioles and could have their contracts selected from Triple-A Norfolk. There’s only one opening on the roster after the Orioles optioned starter Alexander Wells following last night’s 13-1 loss to the Yankees.
Knight, known for his backflips after recording saves, has registered a 1.30 ERA and 1.084 WHIP in 25 appearances with the Tides. He’s allowed four earned runs and 18 hits with 12 walks and 27 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings and leads the club with seven saves.
The Orioles signed Knight, 30, as a minor league free agent in February. The former 28th-round pick of the Giants pitched in Mexico and the independent Atlantic League in 2019.
Diplán, 24, was chosen to the Futures Game this summer. The Orioles claimed him off waivers at the 2019 Winter Meetings and designated him for assignment later that month. They re-signed him to another minor league deal in October.
In 17 relief appearances this season, Diplán has allowed nine earned runs (10 total) and 23 hits with nine walks and 26 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings.
Knight and Diplán haven’t pitched in the majors.
The Orioles already have used 49 players this season. Twelve have made their major league debuts, three short of the club record of 15 set in 2018.
The 40-man roster is full and the Orioles also will need to find a spot for Triple-A pitcher Ryan Hartman after he completes the intake process. They claimed Hartman off waivers from the Astros on Friday.
Rule 5 reliever Tyler Wells is going to be reinstated from the 10-day injured list today or Friday, forcing another move on the 26-man roster. Shaun Anderson is vulnerable after allowing four more runs last night to raise his ERA to 9.16 in 18 2/3 innings.
The Athletic first reported the additions of Knight and Diplán.
The Orioles currently have a four-man rotation with Alexander Wells no longer on the club, but off-days Thursday and Monday temporarily eliminate the need for a fifth.
