Executive vice president Mike Elias said outfielder Heston Kjerstad, the second overall pick in the 2020 draft, has resumed workouts in Sarasota and is getting closer to performing baseball activities.
Kjerstad had to be shut down again earlier this year due to inflammation in his heart.
Left-hander Bruce Zimmermann has a “pretty bad” ankle sprain and might not pitch again in 2021. Elias said it’s TBD.
“It’s going to be close,” he said.
Terrin Vavra remains on his injury rehab assignment and should rejoin Double-A Bowie next week. Baysox pitcher DL Hall is still shut down with an elbow injury and will be re-evaluated later, but he probably won’t pitch again this summer.
Infielder Ryan Higgins, a ninth-round pick this year out of Fresno State, dislocated his shoulder a few weeks ago in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League and needed surgery.
Pitcher Carter Baumler, a fifth-round selection in 2020 who underwent Tommy John surgery, is on a mound progression.
