Jim Palmer is often outspoken and Sunday was no different. Palmer was interviewed by Tom Davis on the Orioles Insider Roundtable show on O’s flagship station, 105.7 the Fan.

He said basically that the Orioles players are in for a rude awakening as Buck Showalter takes over as manager today.

“I get the feeling, because Buck Showalter does his homework, that this team doesn’t know what’s going to hit them. He is going to demand that this club play the…Well, he didn’t hold too much back.

He said basically that the Orioles players are in for a rude awakening as Buck Showalter takes over as manager today.

“I get the feeling, because Buck Showalter does his homework, that this team doesn’t know what’s going to hit them. He is going to demand that this club play the game the right way and part of it is preparing to play the game the right way.

“There is no excuse for it (some of the mistakes this year) and I can’t imagine that it’s going to happen under the helm of Showalter. It contributes to losses on a daily basis and I think it’s going to end.

“It may not happen overnight (with Showalter) but I will assure you this will happen by next year.”

Palmer said not only the players but also the coaches can become better on Showalter’s watch.

“Buck Showalter is going to come in here and he’s going to make, not only the players accountable, he’s going to make the coaching staff accountable for guys getting better.

“We’ve seen the outfield play this year; it’s been horrendous on many occasions. Whoever is the outfield coach is going to have to be accountable to get these guys to play better. Otherwise, you never get better as a team.

“I played with great players, but also had great coaches and they were able to improve my talent when I was coming up.

“This is what’s going to happen under Buck Showalter. This organization is going to get better. When you talk about work ethic, I don’t think these guys know what it’s like to work hard and I think they are going to learn that through Buck Showalter, which to me is one of the greatest things that is going to happen to this organization.”

Palmer wasn’t holding anything back – not that he ever does – as he took the current team to task, but was consistent in his praise for Showalter.

“I don’t know if it’s going to be immediately a positive thing, but I think it’s a step in the right direction. He’s a very thorough guy. I had a chance to talk to him at the All-Star Game where he was asking questions.

“He’s been paying attention and everywhere he’s gone, he’s had the club make a turnaround.”
