They got solid starting pitching. They got a couple of clutch hits. And, they won.

The O’s scored four times in the sixth to back Jeremy Guthrie for a 6-3 win over the LA Angels in front of 16,723 on Showalter’s first day in the dugout.

The O’s were down 2-1 heading to the last of sixth after Howie Kendrick’s two-run homer…On Buck Showalter’s first night as manager, the Orioles did a few things they have not done much since the All-Star break. Or too often at any point this season.

The O’s were down 2-1 heading to the last of sixth after Howie Kendrick’s two-run homer an inning earlier. But they took the lead on Luke Scott’s 422-foot, two-run blast to right and added to it on Josh Bell’s two-run double to left.

The homer was Scott’s 7th in 15 games since his return from the DL and his 19th on the year. Meanwhile, Bell produced his first Major League extra-base hit and first two RBI with that double.

Guthrie had a fourth straight strong start. He allowed three runs and five hits over seven innings, throwing 92 pitches, to improve to 5-11, 4.21.

In those last four appearances, Guthrie has an ERA of 1.98.

Matt Wieters added three hits and two RBI as the O’s opened a seven-game homestand with a victory and improved to 19-33 at home and 33-73 on the year.

Brian Matusz (3-11, 5.46) faces Ervin Santana (10-7, 3.65) here on Wednesday night.
