Matt Wieters led off the bottom of the ninth with a double to left-center field off Angels reliever Francisco Rodriguez. Pinch-runner Julio Lugo took third on Corey Patterson’s sacrifice bunt, and the Angels went with a five-man infield against Cesar Izturis, with Torii Hunter stationed between the first and second basemen.
Showalter stayed with Izturis instead of calling upon Jake Fox, who would have entered the game anyway if it went extra innings. Izturis slapped a 2-2 pitch up the middle and raised his fist in the air.
Game over.
The Angels needed a sixth infielder.
