Gunnar Henderson is the Orioles designated hitter tonight for the opener of an important three-game series in Toronto.
Henderson has reached base in 13 of his first 14 career games and has recorded a hit in 11 of 13 starts. He’s among five players in Orioles history with at least seven extra-base hits in his first 14 games, joining Trey Mancini, Manny Machado, Curt Blefary and Cedric Mullins.
Second baseman Rougned Odor has returned to the lineup after a two-game absence. Ramón Urías is the third baseman.
Anthony Santander is in right field, and Austin Hays is in left and batting eighth.
The bullpen has tossed 11 consecutive scoreless innings.
Left-hander Alexander Wells cleared outright waivers and was assigned to Triple-A Norfolk.
Wells was in the 60-day injured list with a UCL strain. He rejoined Norfolk on Sept. 9.
The 40-man roster isn’t impacted because a player on the 60-day IL is removed from it. But the Orioles would have needed to return him to it.
Pitchers John Means and Chris Ellis are the only Orioles remaining on the 60-day IL. None are assigned to the 10-day or 15-day IL.
The Blue Jays are starting right-hander Trevor Richards in their bullpen game. He’s made two starts this season among 56 appearances.
Richards has a 5.59 ERA and 1.544 WHIP with 32 walks and 70 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings. He started in Texas on Sept. 11 and allowed one run and three hits in one-third of an inning. His next appearance came in relief against the Rays, and he allowed five runs and three hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Richards has made five relief appearances against the Orioles this season, and he’s surrendered seven runs and eight hits with six walks in 5 2/3 innings.
Ryan Mountcastle is 5-for-9 with two doubles against Richards. Santander is 2-for-13.
Matt Chapman is 7-for-19 with a double and four home runs lifetime against Jordan Lyles. Whit Merrifield is 6-for-16 with a double. Raimel Tapia is 5-for-15 with two doubles.
George Springer is 1-for-14.
