Orioles manager Buck Showalter will meet with president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail after today’s game to discuss the composition of the roster.
Showalter and MacPhail wanted the Orioles to go through their rotation once before debating whether to add a fourth bench player and return to a 12-man pitching staff. The club has turned in five straight quality starts, with Brad Bergesen and Kevin Milllwood impressing in back-to-back outings.

Showalter and MacPhail wanted the Orioles to go through their rotation once before debating whether to add a fourth bench player and return to a 12-man pitching staff. The club has turned in five straight quality starts, with Brad Bergesen and Kevin Milllwood impressing in back-to-back outings.
“It’s something we’re considering,” Showalter said. “We’re going to visit it after the game and see where we are.”
Look for the Orioles to carry a four-man bench on its next road trip, which begins Tuesday in Cleveland.
Luke Scott is dealing with a head cold, which is one reason why he’s out of the lineup. Also, I gave you Corey Patterson’s career numbers against White Sox left-hander Mark Buehrle earlier today – 6-for-14 with two doubles, a homer and three RBIs.
“It gives us a really nice option off the bench, too,” Showalter said.
Showalter said he’ll back off Jason Berken for a few days “and kind of freshen him up a bit.” Berken still leads AL relievers in innings and might be wearing down.
MacPhail told me that he’s “two-thirds of the way through the process” with putting players on waivers and seeing how many are claimed and whether potential deals exist. Apparently, a good amount have been claimed, though he isn’t going to reveal any names.
