The line drive that knocked Kyle Bradish out of last night’s game in Texas also rattled the Orioles’ rotation for the series.
Kyle Gibson has moved up to start tonight on regular rest instead of closing out the series on Wednesday.
The Orioles chose Gibson to start the opener in Boston, and the off-day that followed kept him available for tonight’s assignment.
X-rays on Bradish’s right foot came back negative last night, but the club scheduled further tests to ensure that he didn’t sustain a fracture.
A decision is pending on Wednesday’s starter. The Orioles could hand the ball to Austin Voth, who threw one inning on Saturday, but they might need him tonight.
Manager Brandon Hyde likely will wait until he knows how the bullpen is used.
Bruce Zimmermann and Spenser Watkins probably aren’t considerations at Triple-A Norfolk because they pitched over the weekend and would be working on short rest. DL Hall makes his first start tonight, with Drew Rom following Wednesday and Grayson Rodriguez Thursday.
Tyler Wells was supposed to start tonight but volunteered for emergency relief duty last night after Jonah Heim’s line drive slammed off Bradish’s foot. Wells tossed five scoreless and hitless innings.
Gibson made 31 starts with the Rangers from 2020-21 and went 8-9 with a 3.79 ERA and 1.309 WHIP. He was selected to the All-Star team in 2021 prior to his trade to the Phillies.
Gibson has a 3.25 ERA in eight career starts against the Rangers totaling 44 1/3 innings. Marcus Semien is 8-for-23 (.348) with three doubles and a home run.
Texas is starting left-hander Andrew Heaney, who signed a two-year, $25 million contract in December. Tonight marks his debut, and his sixth career appearance (fifth start) against the Orioles.
Heaney has registered a 7.71 ERA and 1.619 ERA versus the Orioles, with 18 runs, 32 hits and 10 home runs surrendered in 21 innings. The most recent meeting was Sept. 5, 2021, when Heaney came out of the bullpen for the Yankees and allowed four runs and four hits in one-third of an inning. He was saddled with a blown save and a loss.
Lineups will be attached here later.
