The Orioles reached agreement with shortstop Manny Machado about three minutes before the midnight deadline.
Scouting director Joe Jordan said the bonus doesn’t exceed the $6 million given to catcher Matt Wieters.
“It played the way we thought it was going to play,” Jordan said.
“We had a really good read on the financial side, what it was going to take, and again, they played it until the end. We’re very happy. It’s a good deal for the club and the player.

“We had a really good read on the financial side, what it was going to take, and again, they played it until the end. We’re very happy. It’s a good deal for the club and the player.
“It’s one of those things where, in these negotiations, it gets very, very tough to stay with what you spent three or four months trying to figure out. It gets real testy. Andy (MacPhail) did a good job. I think trust in the information that we had. Again, this is a good thing for the player and for us.”
Jordan wasn’t certain that a deal would get done until the final minutes.
“We worked really hard on this one, as far as trying to figure out where it was going to go and what it was going to take. We just stuck with our guns with what we thought it was going to be.
“The meat of this thing happened in the last hour.”
Jordan would welcome a signing deadline that’s much earlier. He’s not alone.
At least this one ended on a happy note.
“For us to have a really good draft,” Jordan said, “we had to sign this player.”
The Orioles are still arranging Machado’s physical. They want to schedule it before the homestand ends.
Machado will report to the Gulf Coast League team to begin working out. Jordan isn’t sure how much he’ll play.
The Orioles also reached agreement with 19th-round pick Kenneth Wise, a pitcher from Santa Fe JC. They didn’t reach agreement with 11th-rounder Alexander Gonzalez or 16th-rounder Brandon King.
The club reached agreement with 39 of its 49 picks.
