The Orioles can exceed last year’s win total of 83 with a victory today over the White Sox, in a game that concludes their homestand. They also can register their ninth sweep.
Adley Rutschman is on the bench this afternoon. Gunnar Henderson is leading off and playing third base.
Adam Frazier is in left field, with Austin Hays also working in a reserve role. Jordan Westburg is the second baseman.
Kyle Gibson is seeking his team-leading 14th win, which also would be a career high. He has 14 quality starts, and he worked eight innings against the Blue Jays in his last outing.
Yoán Moncada is 8-for-22 with three doubles against Gibson. Tim Anderson is 7-for-22 with a double and home run.
Gibson is 9-5 with a 3.07 ERA and 1.138 WHIP in 19 career starts versus the White Sox.
Dylan Cease, who drew interest from the Orioles at the trade deadline, has posted a 4.81 ERA and 1.461 WHIP in 27 starts, compared to a 2.20 ERA and 1.109 WHIP last summer in 32, when he finished second in Cy Young voting. In his last two outings, Cease has allowed 12 earned runs (14 total) and 16 hits with seven walks in nine innings.
Cease faced the Orioles on April 16 in Chicago and allowed two earned runs and four total with five walks and five strikeouts in six innings. He has a 3.07 ERA and 1.091 WHIP in five career starts against them.
Cedric Mullins is 5-for-13 with a triple against him. Ryan O’Hearn, who’s playing first base today, is 1-for-11 with seven strikeouts.
Cease has seen a decrease in velocity in each of his pitches and a decrease in whiff rate against all but one, per STATS.
