The Orioles’ roster has changed again.
Get used to it.
Jorge López was activated this morning after the Orioles claimed him on waivers yesterday from the Marlins. Aaron Hicks was reinstated from the injured list.
To make room, outfielder Colton Cowser was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk and reliever Austin Voth was designated for assignment.
López enters a bullpen that includes Yennier Cano. They were involved in the 2022 deadline trade with the Twins.
Hicks returned from a strained left hamstring, appeared in one game in San Diego and returned to the injured list with a lower-back strain. He didn’t require another rehab assignment.
Hicks was aiming for a return in Anaheim, where the Orioles begin a three-game series on Monday, but he’s a day early.
Cowser was recalled Friday for the expanded roster, but he didn’t appear in a game. He hasn’t played for the Orioles since Aug. 11 in Seattle.
With so much movement, it’s possible that Cowser makes a return trip to the majors. But the Orioles also are considering infielder Joey Ortiz and outfielder Heston Kjerstad from their position player stash in Triple-A.
Voth was reinstated from the IL on Aug. 23 after missing more than two months with an elbow injury. He appeared in two games, tossing two scoreless innings on Aug. 27 and allowing three runs Thursday in 1 2/3 innings.
The elbow was an issue for Voth during spring training and flared up again during the season. He’s out of minor league options.
López is wearing No. 73.
The 40-man roster is down to 39 players, which could leave an opening for left-hander John Means when he’s reinstated from the 60-day injured list.
