CLEVELAND – The Orioles haven’t won a season series against Cleveland since 2016 and are hoping for a split this weekend after losing the first two games.
Gunnar Henderson is playing shortstop. He needs one more extra-base hit to reach 65 and tie Cal Ripken Jr.’s record for most by an Orioles rookie.
Since Sept. 8, Henderson is batting .324 (22-for-68) with four doubles, three triples, four home runs and 11 RBIs.
Adley Rutschman is the designated hitter. Aaron Hicks is in left field.
The bench includes Austin Hays, Heston Kjerstad and Jordan Westburg.
John Means is making his third start. He’s allowed four runs and nine hits in 10 innings, with three walks and two strikeouts.
Means has made three career starts against the Guardians and allowed five runs and nine hits in 10 2/3 innings.
The Orioles still lead the Rays by 1 ½ games in the division and their magic number for clinching is six.
Baltimore’s starters have received 5.58 runs of support per nine innings to rank fifth in the majors, while Cleveland’s starters are getting 4.33 runs of support per nine innings to rank 27th, per STATS.
The rotation has covered 29 innings in the last six games and the bullpen has been responsible for 24 2/3.
Right-hander Cal Quantrill has a 5.26 ERA and 1.412 WHIP in 17 starts. He’s allowed five runs this month in 23 2/3 innings.
Quantrill faced the Orioles on May 30 and surrendered eight runs and eight hits 4 1/3 innings. He owns a career 8.82 ERA and 1.592 WHIP in five games against them totaling 16 1/3 innings.
Anthony Santander is 3-for-9 with a double and triple in this series. In five games against the Guardians this season, he’s gone 10-for-21 with four doubles, a triple, a home run and nine RBIs.
The Guardians were eliminated from the playoff race last night.
