White Sox number nine hitter, Gordon Beckham, hit a three-run homer to center off Jeremy Guthrie in the 7th to break a 2-2 tie and give Chicago a 5-2 lead.
Beckham came up with runners on second and third and one out in a tie game. The infield came in. On a night when Guthrie has struggled to command his slider, he missed with a breaking ball on the 1-2 pitch and went fastball on 2-2. Guthrie entered tonight with a mark of 4-0, 2.12 in four starts vs. AL Central teams this year, but now he’s behind by three runs.
The bottom third of the Sox order tonight, by the way, is 4 for 6 with two doubles, a homer, three runs and 3 RBI. Those three hitters have reached in seven of nine plate appearances in the game.
Guthrie now out: Three batters after the homer, Guthrie was taken out of the game after hitting Alex Rios. Guthrie has pitched 6 2/3 tonight at Chicago. Matt Albers came on to pitch.
