Brian Matusz has some slight swelling and bruising behind his left arm, but he hopes to play catch tomorrow. He doesn’t expect to miss his next start, but he could be slotted in a different spot.

Showalter said that, at the worst, Matusz won’t take his normal turn. However, the rookie won’t be shut down because of the bruise.

The Orioles are drawing closer to shutting down Matusz – a term that Showalter tries to avoid – but they haven’t come to a “drop-dead date.”

Will it happen? “More than likely,” Showalter said.

Also, Showalter doesn’t think he’ll need another middle infielder to cover for Roberts and Lugo. President of baseball operations Andy MacPhail asked Showalter whether he wanted another player, but he believes the Orioles are set with Robert Andino, Cesar Izturis and Ty Wigginton.

Quote of the day: Asked whether he’s ever had his jersey given away before tonight, Showalter replied, “Yeah, after I got fired.”

Showalter also expressed hope that the crowd will exceed last night’s count.
