BOSTON – The Orioles weren’t going to make it out of Boston without more roster moves.
Outfielder Ramón Laureano went on the 10-day injured list this afternoon, retroactive to Wednesday, with a sprained left ankle. Infielder/outfielder Terrin Vavra had his contract selected from Triple-A Norfolk.
Laureano got his spikes caught in the turf in Milwaukee while chasing a fly ball during Tuesday’s game. The IL move is retroactive to Wednesday and it could be a quick return.
Laureano said yesterday that he was available to play, but he did some running this morning to test the ankle. The Orioles temporarily lose a player who was 11-for-21 before the injury.
The Orioles signed Laureano to a $4 million contract in February.
The injured list now holds 10 players. Outfielder Colton Cowser is on a rehab assignment at High-A Aberdeen and he started in center last night and homered, singled and walk. Another outfielder, Tyler O’Neill, is on the IL with a left shoulder impingement.
Cowser is eligible to return on May 30, one day before Laureano.
Ryan O’Hearn is making another start in left today in Game 1 of the doubleheader. Heston Kjerstad is in right.
Vavra, who’s wearing No. 54, could make his 2025 Orioles debut. He’s batting .317 with a .838 OPS in 22 games with the Tides.
Vavra broke camp with the Orioles in 2023 and has slashed .254/.331/.304 in 67 major league games.
The 40-man roster has 39 players.
Also, the Orioles appointed left-hander Trevor Rogers as their 27th man again and he’s a strong possibility to start Game 2.
Game 1 won’t begin until 1:30 p.m. due to rain. The tarp has been rolled up.
