The Orioles run of excellent starting pitching came to an end tonight as Jeremy Guthrie was touched for six runs as the Yankees beat the Orioles, 11-3 in front of a sellout crowd of 48,775 at Camden Yards.
Jorge Posada’s two-run single in the first gave New York the lead and Robinson Cano added a two-run homer in the fifth as Guthrie gave up six runs and seven hits over five innings.
Guthrie falls to 10-14, 3.92 and failed to pitch six or more innings for the first time in 12 starts. Curtis Granderson’s three-run homer in the ninth off Rick VandenHurk capped the scoring as New York reduced its magic number to clinch a playoff berth to eight.
By losing the first two games of the series, the O’s streak of winning four series in a row came to an end.
Robert Andino went 3 for 4 with a single, double and homer for the Orioles, who fall to 26-17 under Buck Showalter and 4-13 on the season vs. New York.
