Markakis a first-timer on Hall of Fame ballot

Former Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis is among the 12 new candidates for baseball’s Hall of Fame.
The Baseball Writers’ Association of America ballot also includes 15 holdovers. Results will be announced live on Jan. 20 on MLB Network.
Players must receive 75 percent of the votes for induction in Cooperstown, N.Y.
Markakis was a first-round pick in the 2003 draft who played nine seasons with the Orioles and won two Gold Gloves in right field. His last six seasons were spent with the Braves, where he won another Gold Glove and his first Silver Slugger in 2018 and made his only All-Star team.
The Georgia native finished his career with a .288/.357/.423 slash line and 514 doubles, 22 triples, 189 home runs and 1,046 RBIs in 2,154 games. He registered a 33.7 bWAR.
The Orioles inducted Markakis into their Hall of Fame in 2024.

The first-timers are Markakis, Braun, Choo, Encarnación, González, Gordon, Hamels, Kemp, Kendrick, Murphy, Pence and Porcello.
Former Orioles catcher Matt Wieters and first baseman Chris Davis also were eligible but didn’t make the ballot.
Francisco Rodríguez appeared in 23 games with the Orioles in 2013 and posted a 4.50 ERA in 22 innings. The Orioles signed Hernández to a minor league deal in February 2021 and he opted out of his contract two months later after he sustained an elbow injury.
Players must receive at least five percent of the votes to stay on the ballot. They can remain eligible for 10 years,
Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia and Billy Wagner comprised the class of 2025.
