The Orioles made an interesting personnel move today, placing reliever Jim Hoey on the 40-man roster.
Gone, but not forgotten.
Hoey appeared in 12 games with the Orioles in 2006 and 23 in 2007, going a combined 3-5 with an 8.13 ERA, 23 walks and 24 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings. He didn’t pitch in 2008 because of a shoulder injury that required an arthroscopic procedure, and he spent last year at Double-A Bowie.
That’s the gone part.

Hoey was 2-0 with a 3.16 ERA in 24 games with Bowie this summer, walking 17 and striking out 38 in 31 1/3 innings. He was 4-0 with a 3.38 ERA in 18 appearances at Triple-A Norfolk, walking 17 and striking out 32 in 21 1/3 innings.
Update: As expected, former Orioles bench coach Jeff Datz has followed Eric Wedge to Seattle. He’s been hired as the Mariners’ third base coach.
Don Wakamatsu could replace Datz if he doesn’t land a managing job. He would take over the added responsibility of working with the catchers.
I probably said three words to Datz the entire season – all of them “hello” as he was posting the lineup. But he was highly respected within the organization for his work with Matt Wieters and the way he ran various meetings.
