SARASOTA, Fla. – First baseman Joe Mahoney fouled a ball off his right knee in the top of the sixth inning and limped to the clubhouse.
Mahoney, named the organization’s minor league Player of the Year in 2010, took a few steps up the first base line and bent at the waist. Head athletic trainer Richie Bancells and manager Buck Showalter came out of the dugout, and Showalter stopped the inning with two outs.

Mahoney, named the organization’s minor league Player of the Year in 2010, took a few steps up the first base line and bent at the waist. Head athletic trainer Richie Bancells and manager Buck Showalter came out of the dugout, and Showalter stopped the inning with two outs.
Mahoney, who was facing left-hander Pedro Viola, grabbed his bag of bats and walked to the clubhouse that sits beyond the right field fence. It doesn’t appear to be anything serious, but it seemed like a good time to get Mahoney out of the game and inside the trainers room.
Team 2 still leads, 6-1.
Felix Pie reached on an infield hit and stole second against Viola. Josh Bell walked before Mahoney’s at-bat.
Pie has two infield hits.
Nolan Reimold dropped a fly ball in left field in the fifth inning.
Armando Gabino struck out the first two batters in the fifth before Pedro Florimon singled. Florimon is 3-for-3 with a double.
Update: Caleb Joseph just stroked an RBI single off Wynn Pelzer in the top of the seventh, and Bell tripled in two runs on a ball that Matt Angle had trouble tracking. Angle went back on the ball before racing into left-center field. He reached up and couldn’t make the catch. We’re giving Bell a gift triple.
The batting order has changed, with Pie moving up from third to first. Welcome to intrasquad baseball.
